With the horror-days coming up, I note I am a huge fan of Halloween. I written a ton of sketches about it. Film scripts. Essays. I've written a book about it, even. But, we're here for the sketches, aren't we? Sometimes you tie the holiday to a current fad or event, and that runs the risk of turning an evergreen bit into a topical one. Or you just do a horror parody in April of 2014 and it gets a pass. This sketch goes even further back, I believe. I think it was a Prairie Home Companion submission that I re-did for a comedy troupe or two. It's in that flux point when all my skits were shorter, some barely making it to 4 pages. It was from when all those housing shows started popping up on cable. But in the spirits of the season, let's post it now!

![]() Is there anything that has a shorter shelf life than a topical sketch that isn't selected? Besides those Burger King coupons? Well, I pulled this bit from the back of the hard drive. This version is from 2014, but it's been kicking around a while, in one form or another. It was a goof on the supermarket loyalty cards, but every so often there'd be news about invasion of privacy and NSA outrages and Wikileaks, they I would try to update it and submit it to whomever I was dealing with at the time. Needless to say, it never got picked up. So, here we post... Orwell Market![]() Is there anything that has a shorter shelf life than a topical sketch that isn't selected? Besides a pudding pop left out of the fridge? Whoa, segue! Here's a short bit from 2015 which merged two of the big stories of that July. Or as my intro stated: Well, big news, in just a couple of days, they took down both the Confederate Flag and Bill Cosby. It's brief, because the group often opened with a shorter skit/black-out bit, so I was aiming for that. But, hey, with Coz back in the news, seems like as good a time as any to post it... Pudding Pops![]() Is there anything that has a shorter shelf life than a topical sketch that isn't selected? Besides 1-ply toilet paper? It's rough. You pull together a decent take on today's pop culture news only to learn they didn't pick your sketch to be in this week's show. Then what? Submit it around to the hundreds of comedy troupes that are looking for sketches from strangers? Save them for that reboot of "Fridays"? Or, do you just start posting on your own blog because you never know (actually you do, but you do it anyway)? Remember when Russia was trying to influence us via social media and the NRA? I decided to ramp it up to the next, logical level: NyetFlix![]() Is there anything that has a shorter shelf life than a topical sketch that isn't selected? Besides certain Trump judicial appointments? It's rough. You pull together a decent take on today's pop culture news only to learn they didn't pick your sketch to be in this week's show. Then what? Submit it around to the hundreds of comedy troupes that are looking for sketches from strangers? Rewrite them as multi-part novels for Kindle? Or, do you just start posting on your own blog because you never know (actually you do, but you do it anyway)? So, the book "Fear: Trump in the White House" comes out and everyone is freaking. Only I have a sketch to get out for the big return of TMI: Hollywood. Since they exist at the intersection of pop culture & current events, the trick was to find a slightly different take on it. So, I went Hollywood. It was passed over, but then, a week later, the group actually mentioned the book as a topic they wanted to tackle, so I did a slight revision and re-submitted it. And it was passed on again! So, here's a double dip of... Fear: The Movie (draft 2)The gang over at The Big Jewel have posted by latest bit, "Live Tweeting My Cruise." Check it out!
![]() Is there anything that has a shorter shelf life than a topical sketch that isn't selected? Besides fruit from Top Tomato? It's rough. You pull together a decent take on today's pop culture news only to learn they didn't pick your sketch to be in this week's show. Then what? Submit it around to the hundreds of comedy troupes that are looking for sketches from strangers? Submit them as Craig List samples? Or, do you just start posting on your own blog because you never know (actually you do, but you do it anyway)? Remember that awful season of "The Walking Dead" when Negan arrived? No character development, no classic build-up, just the appearance of a crazy man who projected all his bad behavior on Rick. It was rough enough dealing with the election of 2016, but to have to watch snide Negan in action really sucked the fun out of the show. And had me rooting for the zombies. Anyway, I needed to vent, so I wrote up a TWD parody that undermined that maddening episode. Then there was that weird thing they did by having Negan beat the camera, so we didn't know who got beat for the summer. So that gets a nod, too. I have no idea how that would have played on stage. Maybe attack the guy filming the stage show. Negan At the BatGot a couple of jokes in the latest TMI Minute! for 9/17/18 For 9/10/18 Got a couple of jokes in this latest edition... |
