My favorite cover. It's mine. I conceived it. I had all the statues and comic stuff. I had to borrow my brother-in-law's 35 mm camera to take it. Then one of the co-editors added the Plague-centric stuff and we turned it into a cover. Needless to say, we were doing the Sgt. Pepper cover. Or maybe I needed to say that.

While I had my brother-in-law's camera to create the cover photo, I decided to do this parody of an well-know oil company ad of the day. If you're paying attention, you'll notice all the change doesn't add up to a dollar. It's because those greedy oil companies took it! Also, I had to cover some coins up to make room for the captions that I had to type up separately and cut and paste them to the original photo. Again, people, this is before computers and photoshop. But after rubber cement and exacto blades. Which are sharp. Like crazy sharp.
This issue includes, my published story, The Adventure of the Angry Author, in the original English. Which occurs to me that I probably posted this elsewhere on the blog. Oh, well. It won't kill you to see it again. (A publisher picked up on it when I posted it online and it was included in a French anthology!) The staff had a field day do the lay-out on this story.
This issue was the Adventure Issue, so I pulled out this story. It had been written during one of my Sherlock Holmes phases, where I was reading every Sherlock story out there, including some fairly lame ones.
The magazine had gotten a new influx of talent, and our art improved considerably. But our ability to typeset was still lacking. Things were still be typed on a typewriter. So every written page looks the same. Making parodies of other publications problematic.
The comedy stylings were starting to...go in a different direction, as it were.

and then John Rawlins and I managed to tie-in an actual article to go with the cover! I actually had some Beatles parodies written, added another up. Rawlins came up with the rest and did the artwork.
