A week later, after several calls to Les the Lawyer, Warner finally cut and sent the check. It arrived and I was happy. That same day, I spoke with Kevin to ask if he wanted to see a draft of “Like Magic.” He flipped. He was surprised I had something for him already and sounded enthusiastic. So, that got sent off.
Also, I tell Kevin, yes, I’m still hard at work on Pee-Wee. Then he drops a couple of news flashes on me. Kimberly the Executive is about to become Kimberly the ex-executive. She’s leaving mid-year (we’re talking about February 1991 here). Kevin is about to show the old script, the original version of “Jingle Bell Blues” around. He tells me now that CAA had seen it way back when and “flipped” for it, wanting to “slam dunk it” at Imagine (huh????). Anyway, the option on the script would expire in May. Maybe they might get it into “turnaround,” so the project still sounds healthy and full of life. Oh, that Kevin, ever the optimist.
Two weeks later, Joel the producer calls. He wanted to double check on a draft of “Jingle Bell Blues,” to make sure he was showing the right pre-Pee-Wee version. Sure, they’re fishing it around but it’s in my interest to finish up this version for Warner (for free, he reminds me). I didn’t realize that Joel and Bill and Kevin were a team planning our post-Pee-Wee existence.
I had finished the outline of my latest version and was going to mail it to them later that day. They could look it over while I went to Disney World. That’s right, I’m going to Disney! The check had cleared, so the family was going on vacation! This was a big deal for us.
