American Comedy Network
I came upon American Comedy Network via The Big Jewel. The guy running Big Jewel was involved in ACN and I tracked them down and started submitting, in the 2000s. I was with them until it broke up in 2013. There was a weird good-bye email to all the contributors and I realized the group had gone bust. I know several regrouped under another banner, and I tried to contact them but I never got hooked up. Some of that's on me, I'm really bad at follow-up.
ACN was a place to submit my radio material that I had created for PHC (when applicable). But it allowed me to pull out a lot of my older sketches and rework them. It was tricky. They didn't really produced anything longer than 2 minutes, while PHC tended to run longer pieces that meander along. ACN had to be tight, get in, get out, leave 'em laughing.
Don't get me wrong. I wrote a ton of original material for them. I got into writing song parodies again. I hadn't done it for awhile and it's a really creative rush when you get the right rhyme and it scans AND it's funny and clever. Once the producers complimented me on my Prostitution #9 parody about the NY governor Elliot Spitzer scandal, saying it was the strongest parody they saw.
It was very business-like (unlike PHC). If they accepted something, they informed me and then I had to submit an actual invoice to the company for payment. Those checks came in very handy back there. Heck, every freelance gig check came in handy.
They were doing some flash animation versions of some of the sketches. One of mine, Last Pirate Standing, was turned into a flash that they offered to clients. I guess as radio websites were becoming more of a thing, ACN wanted to offer their clients something more visual for online purposes. I have the file, but can't figure out how to covert it to video to post yet.
And the turn around on bits was amazing. Especially the topical bits. I'd submit and get a same day sale. And the thing was posted to their website the next day. I'm not 100% sure I got everything of mine they produced. They gave me a back door password to the site the radio stations used to download the material for broadcast, and I had to locate and download my bits. I'm missing one American Idol piece and there might have been others. The download page when down pretty quickly after it shuttered and I couldn't check. Anyway, here's what I got.
