Again, they say "name a holiday movie" and they only two that rattle around are "White Christmas" and "It's a Wonderful Life." I mean, I've seen pretty much every Christmas movie, but kept blanking. So, I pulled up a list of the "top 100" holiday movies on IMDB (and I have to say there are some questionable choices there) along with the synonyms for "harmful" and that greased the wheels enough that I came up with 16 or so entries and 7 made the cut. Check them out for a good (if worrisome) laugh over at Weekly Humorist.
Weekly Humorist, a humor magazine I often submit to and occasionally get in, runs these Hashtag Games on Twitter (X), where they name a topic and we submit humorous responses. These games play right into my gag reflex, so I always throw up something. I've taken to setting my calendar to get online every Wednesday to "play" (and by "play" I mean submit content to their website for free--I like to think of it as pun bono work). I always submit a bunch of them on X (Twitter) and some of them get selected for inclusion to their online site.

You get overwhelmed trying to remember something so basic, yet so numerous and you go blank. So I looked up the top 100 sci-fi movies, then another list of 1950's movies. I even looked up synonyms for icy, but pretty much fell on the word "ice" for everything. I did around 14 and got 8 included in the final listings, so, a good showing. But many of the list items were Weekly Humorists own tweets and many simply didn't even bother with sci-fi movie titles. Sure, Frigid Jones Diary is a gimme, but not a sci-fi film, so I didn't include it. Anyway, let's check out some... They came up with a topic, I googled the 7 deadly sins, looked up the top 100 sitcoms and went from there. This is a lot more effort than I put into other hashtag games where I'll submit if something pops into my head. But, I think it's working for me. They are much more receptive to articles I send them now. With that in mind, let's tune into some... Scatological, much? Anyway, I gave it some thought and finally manage to come up with a dozen or so jokes, with 7 making the cut (of cheese)...sorry. Not much else to add so click on through to the farty fun... Now, as spooky season winds down, it was time to come up with Haunted Housewares. Of course, WH posted all the obvious ones in house so the rest of us had to hustle to come up with something original. It took a bit to get up to speed, but I submitted 12 and got 5 in, so good for me. And again, I was all in, submitting 18 and getting 6 listened on their website. A lot of solid entries, even though there was some overlap with previous games like "Silly Cereals" or "Terror Toys." I don't care for the way WH features their own "entries" on the "winners" list and I swear they add some after the game starts, because I swear I read what they posted, and I wind up duplicating some of their jokes anyway. I always submit a bunch of entries and some of them get selected for inclusion to their online site. I went all in on this topic, Terror toys. As we enter Halloween time, I'm always looking to celebrate the spooky season. I entered, like, 18 jokes for this one. But I gotta say something here-when we do the tweet (X-eat?) we all usually add a photo of GIF to the posting, to make it pop, or sometimes to point out the original thing you're parodying (which can sometimes be obscure). But it you post something like "Barbie's Dream Hearse" and you post a picture of an actual pink hearse with the phrase "Barbie's Dream Hearse" painted on it, or "Botched Operation" and show a photo of an actual product called "Botched Operation," how do you get credit for that? And someone else posted images of the SNL sketch Irwin Mainway and his dangerous toys; a coy tribute or rip-off? I dunno. I submit "Frite-Brite" and someone else puts "Brite Fright" and they get included? I dunno. Hey, I got 4 included, solid ones, so I shouldn't whine. Yet I WILL!!! And since it is the spooky season, it's a good time to remind people about my comedy novella, Halloweenies, the tale of a boy, a girl and the Halloween costume he desires. It's a Halloween blast! I always submit a bunch of entries and some of them get selected for inclusion to their online site. Another cereal-based topic this week, Silly Cereals. Now people went two ways with this, like me, some went with synonyms for silly. Others just did random cereal puns, so making any cereal sound silly. To each his own. I got 3 out of 12 in. And not even my favorites, which you'll see on X (Twitter). I always submit a bunch of entries and some of them get selected for inclusion in their online site. This week was right up my alley, parodies of Disney films, coming up with Dismal Disney Movies. The first couple came easy, then I pulled up synonyms for dismal and the list of just the animated films and ran with that. Weirdly, I was competing with a lot of people who don't know what a Disney movie is (Popeye? Chance of Meatballs? Hook?). Anyway, I wrote a lot (which can be found here) getting in 4 out of 11. Weekly Humorist published their favorites on the link below:

I am not a sports guy, don't follow the league, nothing. Plus I was dealing with a household issue, so I was not engaged. Then I figured, "I have to," which doesn't make sense, because I don't. So I called up a list of all the pro football teams to see what I could do with them. The conclusion was "not much." The editors had carved out the most logical ones (and since I neglected to check first, I duped a couple of them). When you have only so many football teams and only so many synonyms for "fall," it makes for a limited pallet. I got a couple of off-beat ones in. Some clever folks did soceer and college teams. Then come the afterthoughts; as I write this, I'm still submitting, long after the game has ended. Anyway, let's see which entries make the cut (and sorry it's such a pop-up ad heavy webpage): |
